thanksgiving time in brooklyn

i told carter that i love how easy it is to upload the cell phone pics right from the phone and onto the blog- even though they are pretty grainy and pixelated. but carter told me that, since i am a photographer, i need to start uploading my quality pictures from my professional camera onto my blog. this seems easy enough, right? but there are so many to go through... and choosing the right one... decisions, decisions!! he is right, though. there is no reason for me to force crummy pictures on you guys, when there are so many scrumptious pictures that i am able to offer you!

so, let's see. where do we begin?
how about thanksgiving in new york city? here we are with our friends, eric and rebecca, at a park in brooklyn. sebastian is 18 months old here.

oh, but i forgot, that the trip to brooklyn (after leaving our friends, the d'souzas, on long island) began with hanging out with the infamous beau jennings at a sweet little coffee shop only a few blocks from his home.

halloween at the great pumpkin farm

my son, being less than a year-and-a-half old, has not yet experienced the joys and tummy aches that are accompanied by cheap, sugary candy; overloads of chocolate; and the general idea of trick-or-treating. that being said, he didn't know what he was missing out on by not going door to door and requesting treats (or tricks) from strangers. we would have loved to take him, regardless of his ignorance to the holiday and all of its delights, but he was pretty tired and the weather was chilly with some precipitation, so really, none of us felt like we were missing out.

what we did do on halloween, prior to not go trick-or-treating, was drive out to clarence, ny for the GREAT PUMPKIN FARM! while all of the rides were shut down, and the carnival aspect of the pumpkin patch was obsolete, there was still a petting zoo, and mounds upon mounds of beautifully-stacked gourds, as well as a big playground with huge tube slides, and rusty old cars that were once a sight to see back in their day... all making for some wonderful photo ops!

none of these are edited, just as neither were my last posts, as i want you to see these exactly as they came from the camera. mind you, different computer monitors may be calibrated differently, so the colors that look vibrant to me on my macbook may not look so robust on whatever you are using... or perhaps they appear to be even more saturated, who knows? but the point is, no post processing has been done on the pictures (yet), and i am pleased with the way they turned out (not just because my two favorite people are the subjects of the photos, either)!

these boys were from somewhere in china (canton, maybe???), and they were so into sebastian and having their picture taken with him.

he was trying to be soooo sweet to seb (seb likes it- can't you tell?)!

and then there were the llamas... which seb looooved.

some of these will get edited and make it onto the website, but in the meantime, i just wanted to share with you the people that i love in the medium for which i feel so passionate. i hope that you enjoyed them, and had a nice adventure at the great pumpkin farm, too!

paul and becky's engagement shoot (sans editing)

the engagement shoot with paul and becky was great! they are such a cute, fun couple, which made shooting their photos a breeze. the leaves on the trees were so vibrant and colorful, and the weather was perfect... well, almost prefect. the sky was fairly ominous, and during the very last images that i was capturing, a huge gust of wind was blown, carrying a massive downpour with it. although it was quite exhilarating, we were scattering like ants as we hurriedly sought shelter.

i think my favorite part of the entire shoot with paul and becky was the red rake that becky brought so that they could rake piles of leaves and play in them for the pictures. not only were no leaves raked during this afternoon photo session, paul was designated as that honorary rake carrier as we walked to different locations around hoyt lake. the red rake became quite a source of entertainment for us as the day progressed.

i love this picture because of how wicked the tree looks against the background of the foreboding sky. but what makes it one of my favorite pictures is the crusty sock hanging from one of the tree branches the sock was promptly removed so that it would not invade any more of the frames... as obtrusive as it was, it sure did make us laugh!

i think i'm going to dub this photo as "PICTURE OF THE WEEK"
this is an overexposed picture, and the 'blown-out' effect is achieved by finagling with the shutter speed and aperture of the camera. i really dig the way it turned out!

aaaaaaannnnd... the infamous red rake!

sorry if i posted too many pictures... there is just something about autumn in new york that gets me going! with that said, i hope you enjoyed my picture overload!

i love taking pictures!!! i try to take my camera just about everywhere, if possible. but even if i don't have my camera on me, i am always capturing mental pictures... vibrant, artistic, unique; images which inspire creativity in later photographs.

my goal for this new blog is to post a photo of the week. maybe i'll even have a theme. that seems a bit too organized and stifling, though, so we'll just shoot for the original weekly photo goal.

this one is from an event at greenpoint studios (brooklyn), and this boy is proudly displaying his favorite comic book character that he created from his own imagination. i love the slight smugness of his face... it's as if he is suppressing an über proud grin just waiting to flash a mouth full of teeth. the little artist is so coy, yet his pride is apparent since he brought his whole sketchbook to show off to the professional artist. his friend in the background who is smiling at him with admiration completes the picture and incites warmth and joy in my heart. (sorry for adding the cheese factor at the end, but i just think this picture is so sweet without trying to be!)

this picture has not been edited and may seem to be less artistic than much of my other work. however, i love the raw emotion that it captures and the stories that it tells. a picture is worth so much more than a mere 1,000 words.
